‘Building Better Tech’ expectation vs reality

The AWS re/start program, run as part of the Yapang Initiative, has been a no-holds-barred challenge from the get-go. I’m an Arts grad; I’m not a 1s and 0s person, I like flowery, verbose words, not logic and integers and floating point numbers (*Batman slap* THEY’RE CALLED DECIMAL, DAMMIT).

So why am I here? Because it’s time to put that humble little Arts degree to work and exercise my interdisciplinary muscle and get technical. Learn a new skill. Get into code and get into the cloud.

I have loved the internet since I first brought in an article I had…

I’m having a hard time conceptualising on a CLI after growing up GUI. Text is hard! Characters are hard! Pictures: easy. Drag and drop: easy.

Linux: “Everything is a file.”
Me: “??!”

The other thing that’s tricky is that I don’t get immediate feedback that I’ve successfully completed a command. Linux is, apparently, “so efficient” that if you do something right you don’t need notification that you’ve done it right. Which, ok so the logical inverse of that is Linux only notifies you when your command doesn’t work. Linux, I don’t know if you’ve met me, but I don’t respond well to only negative feedback. I need that little dopamine kick, the pat-on-my-head, the good-job-why-yes-you-did-just-successfully-change-the-permissions-on-that-file-with-a-swift-chmod 400.

Onwards and upwards, eh. Or, as my favourite superhero says, up and at them.

As if you don’t immediately think of this guy:

Good one, linux. Good one.

Beginners mindset” seems to be a valued mentality in techland but I wonder if it’s because it is so hard to put into practice, especially in tech, where things are generally right or wrong, true or false (boolean! yeah!), one or zero etc etc.

Yesterday I started to learn about linux (thank you, Linus) and by the end of the day I wanted to wipe the computer from my desk, rage panda styles.

Thanks to Goanna Education, I’m part of the third ever cohort of the Yapang Initiative program with AWS re/Start.

What does that mean? I’m at the start of a three month intensive in cloud computing with an opportunity to funnel in to potential employers at the end of it. Skills and development training! Re-skilling! Returning to the workforce!

Also: I will be getting deeeeep into the computer.

This week was all about on-boarding, orientation and foundational IT concepts. I’m starting to think about applications as a program written in a programming language (such as Python, C++, HTML etc). …
